Republican stars US Sen. Sam Brownback and US Rep. Todd Tiahrt, and keynote speaker KMBZ talkshow host Darla Jaye among others will speak at the Olathe Republican Party annual Picnic and Straw Poll June 27 at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop in Olathe.
The family-friendly event features a hotdog and hamburger picnic with informational booths from political candidates and organizations as well as speeches from local legislators and candidates for statewide and congressional offices.
Attendees will be able to cast their votes for the 2010 US Senate, Secretary of State, and 3rd Congressional District races as well as their preference for the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate in the $2 straw poll. Only one vote per person.
Besides Brownback and Tiahrt, confirmed speakers include both secretary of state candidates, Kris Kobach and JR Claeys, and both 3rd District Congressional candidates, Macie Houston and Daniel Gilyeat. Many may recognize Gilyeat as the Iraqi war veteran who was given a new home through Extreme Home Makeovers.
Local legislators speaking include Sen. Julia Lynn, Sen. Jeff Colyer, Sen. Karin Brownlee and Rep. Arlen Siegfried, Rep. Lance Kinzer, Rep. Rob Olson, and Rep. Anthony Brown. Sen. Karin Brownlee is providing baked beans from Smokin' Joe's barbeque and Rep. Olson will provide free snow cones.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27 with lunch served starting about 11 a.m. and speakers starting at noon. In honor of our nation's founders, Saturday's event will also include a dramatic recitation of the Declaration of Independence.
Sam Brownback is currently the only Republican candidate for Kansas governor and Todd Tiahrt is vying with US Rep. Jerry Moran for Brownback's US Senate seat in 2010. Rep. Moran's campaign is checking his availability.
The Olathe Republican Party, chaired by Kathy Kist, hosts this annual event as a public service to let people meet and hear their elected officials and candidates, to learn about political organizations in the area, and to give their opinion about preferred candidates. The picnic is only $5/person or $15/ family and includes hot dogs and hamburgers grilled to perfection by Rep. Arlen Siegfried and friends, baked beans, chips, and cookies.
The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm, located just west of Ridgeview on Kansas City Road, is the only working Stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail. It boasts free 19th century children's games, $2 stagecoach rides, a new Visitor's Center, and a working heritage farm, all open to the public for the event.
