What is a Precinct?
A precinct is the basic administrative electoral district and its boundaries are designated by the Johnson COunty elections office. There are 441 precincts in Johnson County, each with about 1,000 residents, but some precincts have as many as 1,700 and some have no current residents.
Precinct boundaries are established so that they lie entirely in a city and township, that is, no precinct spans a city or township line. Precints are the building bloacks used to create senate, house, and county commissioner districts and city wards.
What is a Ward?
The larger cities in Johnson County designate wards to organize the voting for city council members. In any city, wards, because they are representative electoral districts, will have approximatley the same population.
What Precinct Am I In?
To determine your precinct, click on the Johnson County Election Commission web site [click here] and go to "Voter Lookup." You can see a map of your precinct by going to the [Official Map] at the Johnson County Election Office website. (go to the link for ward and precinct boundaries). Magnify the map until you can see where you live.
Each precinct is identified by a 4-figure code. The first figure is either a letter (indicating a city) or a number (indicating a township). The second figure is a number representing the ward, a "0" indcates there is no ward. The third and fourth figures are numbers indicating the precinct. For instance H306 means City of Leawood, Ward 3, Precinct 6.
